Discover the key advantages of oak doors

      30th July 2020

It’s well known that oak doors can add quality, character, charm and warmth to a home. Natural materials like oak have long been a staple in interior design – offering interesting textures, tones and patterns. To really appreciate the quality of oak doors, it’s worth visiting some of the UK’s best-preserved heritage sites.

For example, Britain’s oldest door can be found in Westminster Abbey, leading to the Chapter House, a meeting place where monks gathered with the abbot to pray and discuss the day’s business. It was constructed of five vertical oak planks with three horizontal battens and iron straps. The boards were cut from a single tree, with rings reflecting growth during the years from AD 924 to 1030. With a deep brown finish, Britain’s oldest door is packed with personality, reflecting the strength and durability of solid oak.

      Resilience and high performance

Okay so not ever oak door is going to last hundreds of years, however, that’s not to say it isn’t possible. Oak doors are loved because they are hard-wearing, durable and long-lasting, so they can withstand the general knocks and wear that can accumulate with everyday use. All oak species are strong, hard, heavy and dense with very close grain. Due to their high tannin content, they are very resistant to insect and fungal infestations.

      An excellent insulator

Oak doors also act as draft excluders, trapping the heat in, which is extremely important during the colder months. The also means that natural oak can be very energy efficient, meaning you spend less on your heating bills because a lot of the heat is retained. This is why many traditional homes with log burners have internal oak doors because they work together to deliver cosy warmth.

      Affordable

Oak interior doors may not be the cheapest option, but you don’t have to spend a ridiculous amount to get high-quality oak doors with all of the long-lasting benefits of this beautiful natural product. At UK Oak, we supply a multitude of handcrafted solid oak doors – all milled, dried, machined and finished on our premises. Our oak internal doors are 42mm thick, so they’re extremely stable, while they’re manufactured from character grade European oak, packed with beautiful features such as knots, splits, and worm track.

      Reduce noise

It’s also important to touch on the acoustic advantages of oak. With thick oak doors you’re able to create a terrific noise barrier, minimising noise from the busy streets or your neighbour’s music. Put simply, when you install oak doors, it’s likely you’ll notice a significant reduction in external noise.

Solid oak lends a beautiful look to any part of the home, and with UK Oak you’re guaranteed excellent craftsmanship with meticulous attention to detail.
