Most gardens require fencing to be reinstalled after 10-15 years because the treated wood gets damaged, especially at ground level due to the effects of rot, and you replace it with new panels. However, oak fences are not prone to such situations. You construct it once, and your children's children will use it.
European oak contains natural tannins that prevent the wood from decaying despite having nothing applied to it. Unlike softwoods that depend on industrial treatment chemicals, which leach away in the process, oak contains everything needed for its durability already inside the wood itself. The oak fences provided by this firm are all newly sawn from European oak.
These aren't recycled oaks or old railways sleepers that were changed into fences. Instead, this is oak fencing materials that were especially milled for fences and they compete with premium treated softwoods when compared to price. If you are constructing your fence in front of your house and it should last a lifetime, then oak is definitely the best choice.
Oak Fence Posts
We provide standard new oak fence posts that are square-sawn and ready to be fixed directly into concrete holes. Rustic oak posts are sawn keeping their waney edges intact with possible pieces of bark still attached and give a more authentic look for estates. Both kinds of oak fence posts last longer than concrete fence posts and are far better looking than metal posts.
Oak Rails
Both standard oak fence rails and arris rails are used as horizontal members that form the frame for oak fencing components. Arris rail is a triangle-shaped wooden post and it's widely used in farm post and rail fence systems. Such oak rails last decades without getting rotten and are found in many estates that were constructed 50+ years ago.
Fresh Sawn Oak Feather Edge Boards
Such oak boards create a traditional type of close-boarded fencing in which boards are overlapped by 25-35mm to create a stable structure. Since they are cut from the thicker part towards the thin end, they have a unique look, which also helps the fence to shed water naturally and prevents ground contact with softwood that easily rots.
Oak Pickets Fencing Components
Oak fences with picket panels and gates create the classic white painted fence that's found in suburban areas. However, this fence can also be kept as it is and turn silvery with age. Nevertheless, it lasts decades while a white softwood fence gets rotten and is replaced several times in a lifetime.
Oak fence posts and boards cost more than softwood equivalents, that's true. But how many times would you be able to install such fence during 50 years? If it requires installation every 12-15 years, then after 3 or 4 replacements it will cost you even more. Besides, it's much easier to construct it once and use it for the rest of your life.
There is no need for any retreatment or replacement of the boards – the wood is strong enough to last up to 60 years if installed properly. If you prefer not to lose the colour, you can periodically treat your oak fence with oils and protect it from sun bleaching – however, this is not required and the fence is going to last.
Since you purchase directly from the sawmill, there's no garden centre markup or merchant margins. You get a discount on oak fencing because you buy wholesale at the best prices in the country.
You'll be able to construct your oak fence from the individual components. Just choose all that you'll need for the particular fence design that you've got in mind. The components will allow you a lot of flexibility – if you require posts spaced 1.8m from each other, buy them and ask to cut rails to that distance.
Most of the oak fencing components we sell are green wood since it's the most common way to sell oak fencing. After you've installed such boards and posts, they will slowly dry out during the first year and may start showing signs of checking. This happens due to wood movement, however, this doesn't damage the wood in any way.
Featheredge boards are required for constructing the traditional post and rail estate fence while arris rails are required if you plan to erect an estate fence. Individual oak fence posts along with pickets are needed for installing the white picket fence. Can't decide what's required for your fence? Call us at 01536 267107 to calculate the amount.
What's the lifespan of oak fences?
When installed correctly, oak fences will last about 40-60 years, if not more. There are many oak fences installed in estates dating from 1950 and they are still in good conditions. The worst effect on any wooden fence occurs when it touches the ground but oak wood is more resistant to ground decay than any softwood.
Does oak fence require treatment?
It's not required – just install it and enjoy. In case you wish to keep the honey-brown colour, then periodically oil it and this will extend its beauty for decades. Without treatment, it will naturally get silvery grey colour during 18-24 months after installation.
Why oak fencing is so expensive?
Due to its higher quality. It lasts decades while softwood fences require regular retreating and maintenance. Oak trees take about 80-120 years before they're ready for harvesting. Such time results in denser, more durable and stronger wood and this means fewer replacements.
Is it possible to construct a standard 6ft close-boarded fence?
Yes. You'll need oak posts (usually 100mm x 100mm x 2.4m), oak rails (2 or 3 per fence), and fresh sawn featheredge boards. Post them at a distance of 1.8m, put rails between them and attach vertical featheredge boards with overlap of 25-35mm.
Will fresh sawn oak fence parts crack and split?
Yes, but it's natural. Checking starts appearing when oak starts drying after being installed and this is common phenomenon for such wood. However, it doesn't weaken oak or affect its durability in any way.
Is it possible to have non-standard cuts?
Of course, you may have any non-standard measurements you'd like. However, keep in mind that for such orders a small cutting fee might occur but it's worth it.
Is it possible to paint an oak fence?
Sure. Most people leave oak natural, however, if you plan to paint your oak fence white as classic picket fence, then just do so. It accepts paints easily and paint won't peel off for decades unlike softwood fence.
